Coalition ends 28 days detention without charge

>It has just been announced by Home Office Minister Damian Green that the Coalition government will allow the provision for terrorism suspects to be held for 28 days without limit to lapse. It will be replaced with a 14 day limit when the lapse occurs at midnight on Monday.

The is another significant move in the civil liberties agenda of this government, which has been driven to the forefront by the Liberal Democrats. The row over control orders is still ongoing, as is the debate on prisoner votes, but this move will go someway to reassuring the civil libertarians in both coalition parties.
