>Yvette Cooper beats Healey and her husband to top Shadow Cabinet ballot

>Yvette Cooper has come out top of the ballot of Labour MPs that decides the 19 members that will make up Ed Miliband’s top team.  Along with the Leader, some members of the Shadow Cabinet were already known before the vote. They were: Harriet Harman MP (Deputy Leader,) Rosie Winterton MP (Chief Whip,) Tony Lloyd (Chair of the Parliamentary Labour Party,) Baroness Jan Royall (Shadow Leader of the House of Lords,) Lord Steve Bassam, (Labour’s Chief Whip in the House of Lords). They will be joined by: Douglas Alexander, Ed Balls, Hilary Benn, Andy Burnham, Liam Byrne, Yvette Cooper, Mary Creagh, John Denham, Angela Eagle, Maria Eagle, Caroline Flint, John Healey, Meg Hillier, Alan Johnson, Tessa Jowell, Sadiq Khan, Ivan Lewis, Ann McKechin, and Jim Murphy.

There are some notable exceptions from the list, including stalwart Peter Hain, former Culture Secretary Ben Bradshaw, and leadership candidate Diane Abbot. The undoubted winner though is Yvette Cooper, who having topped the poll now looks certain to beat her husband to the position of Shadow Chancellor. John Healey was second.

A few VN thoughts on others positions. Liam Byrne will certainly be moved out of an economics position after his infamous note to David Laws, and Caroline Flint may well get put up against Lynne Featherstone and become a Shadow Home Office minister. Andy Burnham, who got a lot of grassroots support in his leadership campaign, deserves a high profile position. He would perform well in DWP or Education. It is likely that if Ed Balls doesn’t become Shadow Chancellor he will be the Shadow Home Secretary.

One gaping hole remains…Shadow Foreign Secretary.
