Graeme McDowell was the hero as he held his nerve in the last singles game to win the point that took Europe to the closest of Ryder Cup victories. At one point today each team had 13 1/2 points, meaning the USA required only half a point to retain the prestigious trophy. It was clearly an emotional moment for captain Colin Montgomerie, who had said how determined he was to win as captain after his highly successful Ryder Cup playing career. The victorious captain disappeared into the club house to reflect in privacy, as media and fans invaded the course as the win was confirmed. In his absence his players though heaped praise on him, after he apparently delivered an inspirational speech when his team where under pressure on day 1.

This morning Europe had turned the scoreboard blue, but with characteristic fight the USA came back. Notably Tiger Woods beat Francesco Molinairi convincingly 5&3, while Ricky Fowler fought back to halve his match with Francesco’s brother Eduardo. Ian Poulter had got Europe going for the day with a magnificent 5&4 victory against Matt Kuchar. The competition, finishing on a Monday for the first time in it’s history, ended when Hunter Mahan missed a chip to the 17th green, and then conceded McDowell’s putt. Cue chaos on the course, led deservedly by Graeme McDowell.
